Pig futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) were mostly down on Thursday as traders took profits after many contracts rose to new highs on Wednesday. Weak pork exports added pressure to the pig market.

The basic weighted average price of pork carcasses in the country since the beginning of the year has a strong upward trend. The price last week was $109.9 per centner, up 29.9% ($22.61) more than at the beginning of the year and 7.3% more than the same week last year. As a rule, the seasonal pattern is such that prices peak in the summer, which also coincides with the period when returns reach their peak in the year. The current break-even price is around $87/cwt, indicating that producers are likely to see profitable months ahead unless there is a sharp drop in hog prices or spikes in feed prices in the near future.
