Exports of agricultural products to Algeria will be diversified by food additives and cereal semi-finished products

Russian food exports to Algeria have grown more than fourfold in the last two years, and in 2022 they exceeded $700 million, reports Russia's trade representative in Algeria Ivan Nalich. The main percentage of supplies now consists of wheat and vegetable oil , but the range of supplies can be expanded, the report says.

Thus, Algeria is the world’s second-largest importer of powdered milk: in 2022, the country spent more than $1.6 billion on its purchase (+30% by 2021), the expert explained. Russian exporters have a chance to occupy a significant share of this market thanks to contacts developed within the framework of a business mission organized by the Federal State Budgetary Institution Agroexport. The Algerians have also lifted the ban on the import of white meat, and Russian exporters can increase the export of these products, and during Ramadan they can increase the supply of red meat, as demand for it increases significantly.

Other potentially exportable goods are food additives and ingredients for the food industry, finished products and semi-finished products based on cereals (oatmeal, muesli, etc.) and confectionery, the expert said. However, in this case, exporters need to be aware of DAPS protective duties on some of these goods, which can reach 70%.

“The trade mission, together with the representative of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture in Algeria, is working to ensure access for Russian goods to the local market. We hope that our joint efforts will yield results and we will be able to increase and diversify Russian food exports to Algeria,” commented Ivan Nalich for the Federal State Budgetary Institution Agroexport.
