The volume of exports of Moscow MEAT products in 2020 amounted to $81.8 million, which is 13.6% higher than in 2019. Most of the supplies come from Kazakhstan, Hong Kong and CHINA , Vladimir Yefimov, deputy mayor of Moscow for economic policy and property and land relations, said on Wednesday.

"The total volume of Moscow exports of meat products in 2020 reached $81.8 million, which is 13.6% more than a year earlier - then it was $72 million. The main foreign markets for Moscow meat products are Kazakhstan, Hong Kong and China, these three directions account for 64.4% of Moscow's meat exports. In 2020, there was an increase in Moscow's exports of meat products to these countries," Yefimov said.

Moscow's meat exports to Kazakhstan grew in 2020 by almost 140% compared to 2019, from $11 million to $26.3 million. According to Yefimov, this country remains the main importer of Moscow's meat products, while the Russian capital is the largest supplier of meat in Kazakhstan among the regions of the Russian Federation.

"Kazakhstan is the largest sales market for Moscow meat products, accounting for 32% of Moscow's meat exports. Meat and poultry by-products are the main category of meat products exported from Moscow to Kazakhstan, the volume of exports of poultry meat products in 2020 is $ 24 million , or almost 92% of Moscow's meat exports to this market. In relation to 2019, the supply of poultry meat to Kazakhstan increased by 185%," the Deputy Mayor of Moscow said.

He added that the top three importers of Moscow meat products also included Hong Kong and China - $13.4 million and $12.9 million, respectively. Deliveries to Hong Kong in 2020 increased compared to 2019 by 77.6%, to China - by 18.4%.

Poultry remains the main EXPORT

According to Alexander Prokhorov, HEAD of the Department for Investment and Industrial Policy of the City of Moscow, in 2020, Moscow producers most often supplied poultry meat and offal abroad.

"The export of poultry products reached $40.8 million in 2020 and accounted for almost 50% of Moscow's meat exports," he said.

Deliveries abroad of this category of products increased by 37% compared to 2019, the main foreign markets for meat and poultry by-products were Kazakhstan ($24.1 million), China ($9.6 million), Kyrgyzstan ($2.9 million), Armenia ($1.6 million) and Serbia ($1.3 million).

According to Prokhorov, next in the list of the main products in the structure of Moscow's meat exports are frozen beef and lamb. Beef exports amounted to $12.8 million last year, up 65% compared to 2019. Mutton accounts for $11.4 million, while exports of this type of product fell by 53.6%, he said.

Promising directions: CIS, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong

According to specialists of the export support and development center "Mosprom", the most promising are two directions for the export of meat products from Moscow - the near abroad and the countries of East Asia.

"The near abroad is attractive for several reasons: the convenient location of the market for the supply of products from Moscow producers - the reduction of logistics costs; the increased demand for meat products presented by Moscow companies in a wide range - the ability to satisfy the demand for specific categories of goods," said the general DIRECTOR of the center " Mosprom" Natalia Shuvalova.

She noted the positive dynamics of exports of poultry (meat and offal) and frozen beef from Moscow to Kazakhstan.

"The countries of East Asia - Vietnam, China, Hong Kong - are of interest for the development of the external direction of trade of Moscow companies in the following categories of meat products: fresh pork meat and various meat by-products," says Shuvalova.

The general director of Mosprom also drew attention to the diversity of demand for meat by-products, which creates opportunities for Moscow companies supplying the corresponding products.

"In order to successfully penetrate such large markets, companies need to find reliable retailers - shops, markets, etc., through which they will be able to establish an uninterrupted sale of Moscow meat products," Shuvalova believes.

Situation in the world market of meat products

The level of meat consumption around the world is stable and even slightly growing, Mosprom reports with reference to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). According to these data, in 2020, global consumption of meat products amounted to 323.9 million tons (0.05% more than in 2019). At the same time, 52% of meat consumption came from China, the usa , Brazil, RUSSIA, Mexico and Japan.

"It is important to note that even in such a large and stable industry as the production of meat products, it is necessary to keep track of changes in consumer preferences and new production technologies in order to remain competitive not only in the domestic but also in foreign markets. Trends in meat consumption are similar to trends in food consumption in general: a focus on healthy eating, an increase in the niche of organic meat products, support for producers who care about reducing waste during meat production,” Shuvalova comments.

According to the same data, the production of meat products in the world in 2020 decreased by 3.6% - to 325.2 million tons. In terms of global meat exports, the latest data is only available for 2019 (data for 2020 were not received from all countries) - $ 135.3 billion, 5.5% more than in 2018. The key exporters are the USA, Brazil, Australia. The United States, the leader in this indicator, exported $18.2 billion worth of meat in 2020, which is 3% more than a year earlier.

Russian exports amounted to $0.88 billion in 2020, with an increase of 48.7% compared to 2019. The main sales markets for Russian meat products are China ($0.31 billion), Vietnam ($0.14 billion) and Hong Kong ($0.06 billion). In all these areas, Russian exports increased significantly compared to 2019: to China - by 117.8%, to Vietnam - by 338.8%, to Hong Kong - by 108.4%, Mosprom reports.
