UK red MEAT exports were worth £1.7 billion in 2023, largely due to strong demand for UK lamb in international markets. HMRC full-year figures show that exports were supported by lamb EXPORT performance, particularly to the EU .

The total value of red meat supplies to the EU during the period rose by 2% year-on-year to £1.3bn, while volumes fell by 12% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, lamb exports to France – the UK’s single largest market – were outstanding, with shipments up 23% in value to £292 million and 23% in volume year-on-year to 45,000 tonnes. Shipments to Germany also saw a notable increase, up 15% in value to £108 million and 12% in volume.

This supported the overall value of lamb exports, which increased by 11.7% to £562 million.

Lamb exports to markets outside the EU rose 10% by volume but fell 15% by value, with Ghana leading the way. Exports to Ghana increased 11% year-on-year in volume to around 1,200 tonnes and 12% in value to £1.4 million. The rise follows successful trade missions to Ghana and the Ivory Coast last year.
