According to statistics, 412 people died in fires during eight months of the year in Belarus. The most common cause is careless handling of fire. Yevgeny Baranovsky stressed that it is necessary to start from the causes first of all: "The systematic work that we have been doing for a long time has led to the fact that the state of housing facilities and fire safety is not the primary cause of fires. Today, the social factor dominates. If we consider the main the cause of fires, then this is careless handling of fire: an unextinguished cigarette, smoking while intoxicated... To date, this is the main cause of all fires. Due to careless handling of fire, 87% of fires happen. "

According to the official representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, another 7% of fires occur due to faulty electrical wiring and violation of the rules for operating electrical equipment. The cause of another 4% of fires is a violation of the rules for the operation of furnace equipment. "These are not such big numbers today. They are under control. And this is the result of systematic work carried out by the bodies and subdivisions of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the field," Yevgeny Baranovsky believes.

At the same time, in cases where the social factor causes a fire, the Ministry of Emergency Situations alone cannot fundamentally influence the problem. "When we consider the social factor as the cause of fires, we are talking about disabled, elderly or people leading an asocial lifestyle," Yevgeny Baranovsky emphasized.
