The Kremlin urged not to exaggerate the significance of the European Parliament resolution

The significance of the European Parliament resolution, which talks about sanctions against Russia, should not be exaggerated. This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov at a briefing, an RBC correspondent reports.

“I would not exaggerate the significance of the resolution for us. Many are beginning to see the light and understand that, firstly, the sanctions hit them themselves; secondly, the sanctions turned out to be not so painful and pushed us to build up our own potential,” Peskov said.

According to the Kremlin representative, the ban on the entry of cars with Russian license plates, which is mentioned in the resolution, discredits not the sanctions, but the entire European Union.

The day before, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it called on EU countries not to confiscate personal belongings and cars of Russians, since such “excessive” compliance with restrictions “discredits the purpose and instrument of sanctions.” At the same time, MEPs called for tougher sanctions against Russia.

In September, the European Commission published a clarification on the application of existing EU sanctions, stating that entry into EU countries using personal vehicles registered in Russia would be considered a prohibited import. Exceptions were made only for EU citizens and their immediate relatives.

The European Commission's clarification is not legally binding - each country independently determines how to implement the restriction. A ban on the entry of cars with Russian license plates was introduced by Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Poland , Norway, Bulgaria and Germany .
