US President Joe Biden extended for a year a number of anti-Russian sanctions imposed under the pretext of Russian interference in the US elections and after the start of the military operation in Ukraine . The White House announced this.

The report said that RUSSIA engaged in "harmful activities" against the United States, including allegedly obstructing the holding of "free and fair democratic elections" and undermining the activities of "democratic institutions in the United States, its allies and partners."

In addition, Washington considered that Moscow:

“violated well-established principles of international law, including the territorial integrity of states”; "encouraged and used transnational corruption to influence foreign governments"; “carried out extraterritorial activities” against dissidents or journalists; "undermined security in countries and regions important to US national security."

All this, according to Biden, continues to pose an "extraordinary threat" to national security, foreign policy and the US economy.

“For this reason, the state of emergency in the country <...> must continue to apply after April 15, 2023. Therefore <...> I am extending for a year the state of emergency [sanctions] declared by decree 14024, ”Biden said in a statement.

On April 15, 2021, the US Treasury included 16 organizations and 16 individuals from Russia, which, according to the US authorities, are behind the SolarWinds software hack and a cyber attack on the network of a number of US ministries, and also interfered in the US presidential election in 2020 .

Washington's measures also included a ban on a number of transactions with Russian sovereign debt. The United States has banned its companies from directly purchasing Russian debt issued by the Central Bank, the National Wealth Fund or the Russian Ministry of Finance after June 14, 2021.

Moscow has repeatedly rejected claims that Russia was trying to interfere in the pre-election processes in the United States. In March 2021, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia did not interfere in the American elections. “Russia has nothing to do with any campaigns against any of the candidates,” he stressed.

In March and April 2022, Biden issued Executive Orders 14068 and 14071 to take additional measures in connection with the state of emergency in the country declared in Executive Order 14024. The first of these provided for the imposition of import restrictions on a number of Russian goods and additional sectoral sanctions . The second is a complete ban on new investments in Russia.

At the end of March of this year, Biden already extended the state of emergency and anti-Russian sanctions for a year for cyber attacks that the country allegedly suffered.

At the time, the statement said that Russia's "malicious activity" in cyberspace continues to pose a threat to US national security, US foreign policy, and the US economy.

The Kremlin and the Russian Foreign Ministry have dismissed allegations of involvement in cyberattacks and called them ridiculous.

Since the beginning of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the US has imposed ten packages of sanctions against Russia. They included large-scale restrictions on the Russian financial system (including the Central Bank and major banks), the activities of a number of Russian companies and individual sectors of the economy, the closure of airspace and seaports, personal sanctions against the Russian leadership, major businessmen and their families.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the sanctions that the West imposed on the country thoughtless and insane and said that the speed with which they were introduced and the number of restrictions that Russia faced had no precedents.
