WHO opposes blood plasma transfusion from recovered COVID patients

Patients with coronavirus are not recommended to transfuse the blood plasma of those who have recovered from COVID-19 . This follows an updated recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Despite initial expectations, current research suggests that it (blood plasma transfusion) does not improve survival or reduce the need for mechanical ventilation, and, in addition, it is costly and time consuming,” the report says.

The WHO stressed that it is not recommended to transfuse plasma from people who have recovered from coronavirus, patients whose illness is not severe, as well as seriously ill and critically ill patients.

These findings were based on the results of 16 studies involving 16,236 patients, the organization added.
