The Scottish National Party (SNP) and the Greens, who advocate secession of the region from the UK, have guaranteed themselves a majority of seats in Holyrood, the regional parliament, REUTERS and the BBC reported.
The vote count is still underway, but the SNP and the Greens together have already won 65 seats in the 129-seat parliament.
The majority in Holyrood will strengthen the position of the leader of the Scottish nationalists, Nicola Sturgeon, who demands that the UK hold a second independence referendum.
Commenting on the possibility of a new vote, she said that London should not interfere with this process. “The only people who can choose the future of Scotland are the Scottish people, and no Westminster politician can or should stand in that way,” said Sturgeon (quoted by The Washington Post).
