The Russians are ahead of the Europeans in the number of trips to the Maldives

This summer, almost every fifth tourist in the Maldives was from RUSSIA - the tourist flow to exotic islands exceeded pre-pandemic figures by several times.

In the summer of 2021, the Russian tourist flow to the Maldives significantly exceeded the pre-pandemic level, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Maldives, which RBC reviewed. In June-August of this year, the country, known for its island luxury resorts, received 53.9 thousand Russians. In the summer of 2019, 3.2 times fewer tourists from Russia visited the Maldives - only 15.3 thousand people.

The pandemic has made Russia a leader among countries from which tourists come to the Maldives: in the summer, the share of Russians among all those who visited this country reached almost 18%. Only India has a higher figure with 22.5% (67.8 thousand). In just three summer months, 301.5 thousand foreigners rested in the Maldives.

Before the pandemic, in the summer of 2019, when the total inbound tourist flow reached 384.9 thousand people, the main tourists in the Maldives were the Chinese - their share exceeded 23%. The current leader, India, had this figure below 10%, followed by tourists from Europe: British and Germans (about 6% each) and Italians (slightly more than 5%). The share of Russians then did not reach 4%.

This summer, the flow of tourists from Russia outstripped the number of tourists from Europe. The share of the Germans remained at the level of 6%, the British fell to 1.4%, the Italians - to 1%. The indicator of the former leader, CHINA , amounted to only 0.2% in June-August 2021.
