The number of milk producers

In Austria, the number of milk producers is declining. According to Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA), the number of Austrian milk producers fell below 25,000 for the first time.

In 2019, there were 25,608 milk producers in the country, which is 963 (or 3.8%) more dairy farms than in 2020.

In percentage terms, the number of milk suppliers in Lower Austria decreased the most (-6.5%) and now stands at 4162 suppliers. In Upper Austria, 300 farmers have cut off milk supplies. This means that in 2020 the number of active suppliers in the most milk-rich federal state was 6,392.

In 2021, the number of milk suppliers will decrease further, the AMA notes.
