In accordance with applicable EU rules, this positive vote follows a green light given by EU member states on 13 April this year. "[This] vote reflects the European Parliament's political support for allowing the use of insects in poultry and pig feed, bringing us one step closer to final authorization," said IPIFF President Adriana Casillas.
“The upcoming approval represents an important milestone for our sector as it will open up two key markets targeted by insect feed producers. Thus, it will contribute to the expansion of the European insect production sector,” explained the Chairperson of IPIFF.
According to IPIFF, allowing the use of insects in feed for poultry and pigs will help improve the sustainability and competitiveness of the European livestock sector and reduce the protein shortage in the EU. “More broadly, this will increase the sustainability of the agri-food supply, in line with the goal of the EU’s Farm to Fork strategy and the new Circular Economy Action Plan,” said Aman Paul, IPIFF First Vice President.
“In recent years, insect manufacturers have worked closely with academia and feed manufacturers to develop products that meet the nutritional needs of poultry and pigs. We look forward to offering local solutions for both conventional and organic food pig and poultry farmers,” added Christophe Trespeuch, Chair of the IPIFF Feed Hygiene and Animal Nutrition Working Group.

We hope that this will happen in the fall,” concluded IPIFF Secretary Christophe Derrien.
