Brazil: Parana leads pig production increase in 2023 with record highs

Paraná produced 12 million pigs in 2023 (12,138,752) and ranks second in the national ranking with 21.2%, behind Santa Catarina (29.5%) and ahead of Rio Grande to the south (17%). The number of pigs slaughtered increased by 5.7% (11,478,124 in 2022), another historical record. 

In 2023, the country slaughtered 57.17 million more pigs, 1.3% more than in 2022 (707.33 million pigs), which is also a new record.

Production was increased by higher slaughter in nine of the 24 producing states. The largest increases were recorded in Paraná (+660.63 thousand heads), Santa Catarina (+631.22 thousand heads) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+64.29 thousand heads). On the other hand, decreases were recorded in Minas Gerais (-266.10 thousand heads), São Paulo (-166.97 thousand heads), Mato Grosso (-126.92 thousand heads), Goiás (-54.25 thousand heads) and Rio Grande do Sul (-126.92 thousand heads).
