The number of visits to doctors due to injuries in winter increases by 2-3 times, Andrei Bakanovsky, a traumatologist-orthopedist, junior researcher at the adult traumatology laboratory of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, told reporters, BelTA has learned.

"Winter is the most traumatic period. We receive 2-3 times more requests for assistance. Over the past year - from December 1 to April 30 - we received about 22 thousand injuries in adults. Almost 2.5 thousand of them were hospitalized. “These people received rather severe injuries, which affected the length of their stay on sick leave,” Andrey Bakanovsky said.

The traumatologist-orthopedist noted that most of the patients are of working age, but often the elderly are admitted, who receive the most severe injuries and whose treatment is a serious problem. One of the most severe and frequent pathologies in the elderly is a hip fracture requiring surgical treatment. Dangerous injuries also occur in people intoxicated: since a person is not able to maintain balance, he receives fairly large-scale injuries.

The DOCTOR advised older people to be more interested in the weather forecast and plan the day taking this information into account. On ice it is better to cancel your plans, wait a day or two at home without going out.

If a person is still injured in a fall, you should not get up abruptly, you need to assess the situation, try to quietly move the injured arm or leg, Andrey Bakanovsky noted. "If you feel a sharp pain and can't get up, it's better to ask passers-by for help or call 103 - the ambulance service will direct you to where qualified assistance will be provided," he added.
