December 17, Vitebsk. A resident of Vitebsk was sentenced to 14 years in prison for attacking a police officer and will be required to pay compensation to the victim for moral damage. This was reported to a BelTA correspondent by the Department of Internal Affairs of the Vitebsk region.

In early July, the PPSM squad of the Pervomaisky District Department of Internal Affairs left after a family scandal was reported in one of the apartments on Stroiteley Ave., where the owner of the apartment, who was intoxicated with alcohol , behaved aggressively and threatened his wife with violence. Opening the front door to the arrived police officers, the man suddenly began to stab one of the patrolmen with a knife, inflicting cut wounds on his hand, but he was neutralized and detained.

A criminal case was initiated against the detainee under Article 362 of the Criminal Code for attempted murder of an internal affairs officer in connection with the performance of his duties to protect public order.

In December, the Vitebsk Regional Court sentenced the attacker to 14 years in prison for this crime, to be served in a strict regime colony. The court also satisfied the employee's claim for compensation for moral damage caused by the crime.

Law enforcers reminded that a police officer in the performance of his duties is under special protection of the state, and obstruction of his official activities entails responsibility established by law.
