The State Duma proposed to call September 3 Victory Day over

A group of deputies and senators from United RUSSIA and the Communist Party of the Russian Federation proposes to rename the day of military glory on September 3, which is now celebrated as Victory Day in World War II, supplementing the name of this memorable date with an indication of the victory of the USSR over Japan, follows from the State Duma database.

The bill proposes to amend Federal Law No. 32-F3 "On the days of military glory and memorable dates in Russia."

If accepted, the day of military glory on September 3, which is now officially called "September 3 - Day of the end of World War II (1945)", will be called "September 3 - Day of victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II (1945)" .

This step is considered by the authors of the project as a response from Russia to the sanctions imposed by Japan against Moscow after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the explanatory note says.

The document states that Japan has launched a legal procedure for the abolition of the most favored nation treatment for Russia, imposed personal sanctions against the Russian leadership and blocked the reserves of the Bank of Russia. Also "in the political routine" of the administration of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida "accusations of "aggression" and threats to "make him pay a heavy price" are firmly entrenched," the deputies were indignant.

“The wording about the victory over militaristic Japan should be enshrined at the level of federal law, which reflects the principle of historical justice,” the authors of the bill believe.

On September 2, 1945, Japan signed the Act of Unconditional Surrender to the allies in World War II - the USSR, the usa and Great Britain, CHINA. This date from 2010 to 2020 was celebrated in Russia as the Day of the end of World War II.

In September 2020, the State Duma proposed to postpone World War II End Day from September 2 to September 3. Explaining the proposal to move the memorable date to September 3, the deputies pointed out that this particular day was designated as a holiday in the USSR in 1945 - a decree on this was issued by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. According to the document, September 3 was declared a holiday of victory over Japan, as well as a non-working day (later it became a working day again). The authors of the initiative also explained that more than 1.8 million people were awarded medals "For the victory over Japan", on the reverse side of which the date "September 3, 1945" is indicated.

The Human Rights Council under the President of Russia and the Mothers of Beslan Committee objected to the transfer of the day of military glory to September 3, since September 3 is the day of memory for the victims of the Beslan terrorist attack in 2004. However, the law was adopted by the State Duma, the Federation Council and signed by the President.

The terrorist attack in Beslan took place on September 1, 2004 at school No. 1 during a solemn assembly. The terrorists held the hostages for two and a half days, until 3 September. The attack killed 333 people, 186 of them children.
