Bloomberg called the EU's 13th package of sanctions "modest"

The 13th package of sanctions against RUSSIA will be weak compared to previous ones, since Brussels is unlikely to have time to prepare new economic measures by February 24, the agency writes

The new, 13th, package of EU restrictions against Russia, which is being prepared to be presented by February 24, will be “modest” in contrast to the bloc’s previous sanctions rounds, reports BLOOMBERG .

The European Commission informed EU ambassadors about the details last weekend. As the agency writes, citing sources, Brussels is considering new economic restrictions, but they are unlikely to be prepared in time for February 24, the second anniversary of the start of hostilities in Ukraine .

The measures are being coordinated with G7 allies, and countries within the group are expected to release their own package of sanctions by that date.

In the new package, the EU will focus on expanding sanctions lists, additional trade restrictions, and combating circumvention of sanctions measures through third countries. According to DPA and Polskie Radio, 200–250 individuals and companies from Russia may be subject to restrictions, but “no big names” will be on the list, REUTERS wrote . The agency reported that the EC will also not include new import bans , contrary to calls from some countries (in particular, Poland and the Baltic countries asked to ban the import of Russian aluminum and liquefied natural gas).

Another measure under discussion is to limit travel by Russian diplomats within the Schengen zone, Politico reported, noting that it would be difficult to implement. This idea was previously put forward by the Czech Republic, stating that “agents of the Russian special services are arriving in the country.”

Moscow calls the sanctions illegal and ineffective, while admitting that the restrictions will remain in place for a long time. According to Russian authorities, the measures harm Western countries themselves. The Kremlin noted that the EU “is probably already exhausting the resource of those areas where sanctions can be introduced.”
