A US COURT sentenced 40-year-old Russian Vladimir Dunaev to five years and four months in prison for allegedly introducing malicious software to carry out cyberattacks on American hospitals and other government enterprises. The damage from his actions amounted to more than $3.4 million, the US Department of Justice said in a statement.

According to investigators, Dunaev was a member of a transnational cybercriminal organization known as the Trickbot Group and provided “specialized services and technical capabilities” for the installation of Trickbot malware, which he developed, designed to steal money and facilitate the installation of ransomware.

The Ministry of Justice noted thatThe Russian developed browser modifications and malicious tools that criminals used to collect credentials and data from infected computers, and also created software code that prevented detection of malware.

“During Dunaev’s participation in the scheme, more than $3.4 million was stolen from ten victims in the Northern District of Ohio, including Avon School and a North Canton real estate company, using ransomware deployed by Trickbot,” the department emphasized.

Dunaev, according to the US Department of Justice, permanently resided in the “Yakut region of RUSSIA and in Southeast Asia,” but in February 2020 he arrived in South Korea, from where he could not leave for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions imposed. His passport had expired, and he issued a new document through the embassy, ​​but did not have time to use it to return to his homeland - on May 25, the Korean Ministry of Justice received an emergency request for extradition from the US Department of Justice. He was extradited at the end of October 2021. The crimes he is charged with date back to 2015–2020.
