World Veterinary Association calls for reduction of live animal transport and search for alternatives

A document prepared by the Animal Welfare Working Group says that "animal welfare concerns during land transport are a global issue" and highlights the need to review current practices to ensure safer transport that meets animal welfare principles.

In this context, the WVA states that “transporting animals, both short and long distances, inevitably causes stress due to grazing practices, confined spaces, unfamiliarity with the destination, and exposure to adverse environmental conditions.” it therefore states that “efforts should be focused on minimizing the transport of live animals whenever possible and considering alternatives.”

The statement also stresses that “all stakeholders share responsibility for the welfare of these animals” and states that “drivers, transport companies, owners and operators must fulfil their responsibilities for the care of the animals entrusted to them in accordance with applicable regulations,” which includes assessing the animal’s suitability for transport in advance and creating conditions that reduce stress and risks during the journey.

From a public HEALTH perspective, the WVA warns that “transportation significantly influences susceptibility to and transmission of diseases” and that “stress during transportation can activate latent infections, increasing the likelihood of disease transmission.”

In this regard, the organization advocates that “to reduce disease risks and ensure animal welfare, efforts should focus on minimizing the transport of live animals where possible and considering alternative options.”

Additional measures include that “to ensure animal welfare, journey times should be kept to a minimum” and that “animals should not be transported in extreme temperatures around the world unless effective mitigation strategies are in place.”

Here they mention the use of properly equipped vehicles to maintain a safe and acceptable temperature. They also stress the importance of providing “access to water at well-designed stations throughout the journey,” as well as applying strict biosecurity measures and avoiding mixing animals with different health conditions.

Finally, the WVA calls for stronger legislation and enforcement, stating that “strengthened legislation and rigorous enforcement are essential to maintain welfare standards worldwide,” and collaboration with all stakeholders in the sector to implement changes that will ensure safer transport in line with international standards such as the OMSA Land Transport Code.
