In Germany, there has been a sharp decline in the number of pigs over the past decade

According to preliminary data, the number of pigs in Germany decreased by 5.5% (-1,430,600 heads) compared to November 2020 and by 3.3% (-840,400 heads) compared to the previous year (May 2020).

Changes in the number of fattening pigs are especially noticeable, since after an increase to 11.9 million head. in November 2020, their number decreased by 5.9% (-707,000) to 11.2 million in May 2021. Compared to November 2020, the number of piglets decreased by 5.5% (-427,500) to 7.28 million, the number of breeding sows fell by 3.9% (-66,000) to 1.62 million.

In addition to the number of pigs, the number of pig farms is decreasing. As of May 3, 2021, there were 19,800 farms, up 3.3% (-700 farms) compared to November 2020.
