
The authorities of the Pskov region estimated the preliminary damage to the region's economy from outbreaks of African swine fever at 500 million rubles, Governor Mikhail Vedernikov told reporters on Thursday.
The first outbreak among the population of wild boars was detected on July 5, within a few days the disease was also detected in four districts of the region. A large outbreak of ASF has become the Shelonsky production site, where 36,000 pigs are to be destroyed. Since July 14, a regional emergency regime has been introduced in a number of municipalities of the Pskov region in connection with the epizootic of the disease.
“If we talk about the closure of enterprises, they are obliged to stop their work. As for the damage <...> based on the fact that we have already recorded almost 40 thousand heads that they went for destruction, this is plus lost income. I think about 500 million rubles damage can be," the governor said.
He also added that due to ASF, part of the employees of enterprises in the region lost their jobs. “Unfortunately, it has come to the dismissal of employees. About 200 people have lost their jobs, 40 are already on the labor exchange. And we are now working with people in order to help them join the labor exchange if necessary, or to offer alternative vacancies that are currently day are available," Vedernikov explained.
African swine fever is an infectious disease with an incubation period of up to two weeks, its carriers are animals. The virus enters the body through food, wounds on the skin, mucous membranes, insect bites. Cases of human infection have not been registered, but scientists do not exclude such a risk.
