As part of the “Christmas Trees for Cows” campaign, Tomsk residents handed over a little more than a thousand Christmas trees and firs for their processing into cow feed in January, which is significantly less than in 2021 and previous years. Experts attribute this to high prices for live spruces and the widespread transition to artificial trees.
Eco-action "Christmas trees for cows" has traditionally been held in Tomsk since 2013. The event is held by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Tomsk Region together with companies involved in the field of waste management, as well as the breeding farm "Zavarzinsky". As part of the campaign, Tomsk residents leave Christmas trees, cleaned of decorations, at garbage containers, they are collected and processed into vitamin crumbs for cows and calves. This year spruces were harvested from mid-January to early February.
As reported by the Regional Committee for Nature Protection, the environmental campaign "Christmas Trees for Cows" in Tomsk has ended.
“According to the regional operator UMP Spetsavtokhozyaystvo, 1,070 spent spruce and fir trees were taken from container sites. The last car with New Year trees will go to the farm of the Zavarzinsky breeding plant in the coming days.
Spruces are delivered to the base of the stud farm in Mirny, spruce branches of old trees are processed into vitamin FLOUR. it is subsequently added to feed for cows and calves.
At the same time, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Tomsk Region noted that the residents of Tomsk are using less and less live spruce trees on New Year's holidays, and therefore they were harvested for feeding cows less than in previous years.
According to Anna Dorokhova, a consultant to the State Environmental Supervision Committee of the department, this year Tomsk residents have handed over almost 30% less New Year trees for vitamin supplementation.
“Last year, almost 1,500 of them were collected. The reason for this is the annual increase in the price of goods at Christmas markets and the transition to reusable artificial Christmas trees, which are easy to use and more affordable due to their diversity,” the specialist noted.
Recall that in previous years, up to three thousand spent coniferous trees were collected for vitamin feed for animals in Tomsk. The action was first held in 2013, when 1.5 thousand trees were collected, in 2014 - 2.5 thousand trees, and at the beginning of 2015 - almost 3.5 thousand. In 2016, a little more than two thousand Christmas trees were collected, in 2017 - more than 3 thousand, in 2018, 2019 - 2.5 thousand spruces and firs, in 2020 - two thousand, but even then experts noted that Tomsk residents were actively they switch to artificial trees and the collection of live ones decreases.
