Pork EXPORT sales for the week ended January 11 totaled 33,400 tons, with 10,000 tons sold to Mexico and 9,000 tons to Japan. Last week, shipments totaled 31,400 tons, with 12,500 tons sent to Mexico and SOUTH KOREA and 4,100 tons received.
Weather remains a major concern for traders and producers. Extreme cold tends to slow the weight gain of livestock because the feed the animals consume goes towards keeping them warm rather than growing. Average hog weight fell to 291.3 pounds for the week ending Jan. 13, from 293.1 pounds the week before, the USDA reported .
MEAT processing has increased following recent weather disasters, with the USDA estimating that meat processors sent about 489,000 hogs to slaughter on Wednesday. That was up from 477,000 pigs a week ago. USDA hog slaughter for the week totaled 2.652 million HEAD, up 4.4% from the same week last year. Pork production totaled 575.8 million pounds, up 4.2% from the same week last year.
