US boosts poultry shipments to Japan

Over the past few decades, the consumption of poultry MEAT in Japan has grown steadily. Japan imports about 40% of its chicken meat, most of which is raw and processed from low-cost suppliers in Brazil, Thailand and CHINA . The country is also a major importer of frozen chicken feet, and in 2022, the US accounted for 1% of Japan's poultry imports and 24% of egg imports.

The turkey market in Japan has doubled

The Japanese turkey market, although small, has doubled in size over the past 5 years and continues to grow rapidly. The usa is the main supplier of turkey meat to Japan.

The country is also a major importer of egg products for further processing into mayonnaise and other prepared food products.

Bird flu

On April 1, 2023, the USDA Animal and Plant HEALTH Inspection Service, in conjunction with the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, agreed to reduce highly pathogenic avian influenza trade restrictions on US poultry products exported to Japan. EXPORT bans from affected areas can now be lifted 28 days after cleaning and disinfection (up from 90 days previously).
