The shipment of 2,901 animals is unusual, as Uruguay's animal tracking protocols are considered among the strictest on the continent. All livestock destined for export must be individually identified electronically, allowing for tracking of their health and movement history.

Economic impact and international standards

Despite the setback, MGAP confirmed that the mortality rate during the voyage was around 1.4%, which is within the expected range for this type of maritime transport, which typically lasts more than 20 days.

International organisations such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) indicate that mortality rates of less than 2% during long-distance exports are considered acceptable, although the issue remains a subject of debate among animal welfare organisations.

From an economic perspective, the average value of live exported cattle ranges from $800 to $1,100 per head, depending on the animal's age and weight. This means the estimated commercial value of the culled consignment was between $2.3 and $3.1 million, excluding logistics and feed costs at sea.

Uruguayan authorities are now considering redirecting supplies to other markets, possibly the Middle East   or North Africa, where there is also strong demand for this type of cattle.
