Israeli company gets green light to produce world's first cultured beef steaks

Aleph Farms, based in Rehovot, Israel, received initial approval from the Israeli Ministry of HEALTH in December, the company said in a press release. The move was announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called the project a “global breakthrough.”

The firm said it plans to introduce home-grown "small steak" to Israeli consumers. The beef will be raised from cells obtained from the fertilized egg of a Black Angus cow named Lucy, who lives on a farm in California.

Regulators still must approve the company's labeling and conduct a final review, said Yoav Reisler of Aleph Farms. After this, it may take months before the product is introduced to the market.

Israel is a global leader in this sector, and its producers are also developing alternatives to traditional fish and chicken products.
