"There is a tendency to lose some domestic gene pool breeds. Over the past 30 years, such breeds as the Yurinskaya, Kurganskaya, and Northern Horned have completely disappeared from the country. The Tagilskaya, Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya, Istobenskaya, Bestuzhevskaya, and Suksunskaya breeds are currently under threat of extinction. Based on the results of the breed inventory, 14 breeds have been recognized as gene pool breeds, that is, subject to preservation," said Sergei Pestrikov.
He explained that the country lacks purebred breeding bulls that are capable of preserving the breed. For each gene pool breed, the number of breeding bulls in the Russian Federation is from 5 to 14, which is not enough.
According to Sergey Pestrikov, the JSC "Head Center for Reproduction of Agricultural Animals" will be used to preserve gene pool breeds. "Several dozen breeds were selected for this purpose, the emphasis is on the most common and in-demand ones in the Russian Federation, since there are currently problems with imported semen," explained Sergey Pestrikov.
Today, 41 breeds are approved for use in Russia, 22 of which are domestic.
According to Sergei Pestrikov, animals of gene pool breeds have adaptability to various climatic conditions, high resistance to various infectious diseases, and also higher indicators of protein-fat composition of milk.
