Thailand's pig industry plans to cut production by 450,000 piglets from March to August to boost the price of live pigs, which has been below production costs for more than a year.
The Thai Pig Breeders Association, a national group of pig producers, has called on pig farms with more than 2,000 sows to donate piglets weighing 3 to 7 kg (6.5 to 13 lb) to the association. These piglets will then be sent for processing and prepared as suckling pigs for sale.
Since March, approximately 20,000 piglets have been removed from farms. However, the price of live pigs is unlikely to increase. Despite the association's attempt to raise the price in the first week of April, the price remained unchanged, reflecting the fact that the glut of live pigs and smuggled frozen pork remains rampant.
Demand for pork in Thailand remains weak as the country's economy shows very little growth.
The price of live pigs in Thailand in the first week of April ranges from 58-66 THB/kg or $1.6-1.8 US/kg. Data from the Thai Pig Breeders Association shows that the average production cost is THB 80/kg or $2.2 US/kg.
Vietnam
Currently the price of pigs is 59,000 – 60,000 VND/kg in the north; 58,000 – 61,000 VND/kg in the central region of the country and 60,000 – 62,000 VND/kg in the south. The average price will be around VND59,800/kg live weight ($1.09 US/kg or $2.40 US/kg live weight). Philippines
The first quarter of 2024 saw significant changes in the ongoing fight against African swine fever ( ASF) .) in the Philippines. Despite concerted efforts by government and industry stakeholders to control and prevent the spread of ASF, challenges remain, highlighting the importance of continued vigilance and preventive measures.
Ongoing ASF cases: In the first quarter of 2024, ASF outbreaks were reported in several regions of the Philippines. Despite efforts to contain this swine disease, intermittent outbreaks have occurred on both large commercial farms and small households, resulting in significant losses among pig farmers.
Impact on the Pork Industry: The new wave of ASF has had major impacts on the pork industry, resulting in decreased pork production, supply chain disruptions, and increased production costs. Small farmers in particular have been hit hard, many of whom are struggling to recover from the economic losses they have suffered. However, live weight pig prices remain stable and this trend is expected to continue in the coming months.
As the ASF situation in the Philippines remains fluid, stakeholders are urged to remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to prevent and control the spread of the virus. Enhanced biosecurity measures and strict adherence to quarantine protocols are necessary to minimize the impact of ASF on the pig industry.
