Brazil: Pork production in Mato Grosso do Sul increased by 62% in five years

Pig farming in Mato Grosso do Sul has proven itself to be a modern, productive and high-quality activity. The state has the sixth-largest production in the country with more than 100,000 hogs and is expected to grow 49% over three years.

Data from Famasul System's technical department shows that 3.023 million HEAD were slaughtered in the state in 2022, a 55% increase from 1.950 million head slaughtered in 2017. Pork production in Mato Grosso also performed well, rising from 148,000 tonnes in 2017 to 240,000 tonnes last year, an increase of 62%.

Access to rural credit, one of the main forms of finance available to producers, has increased in Mato Grosso do Sul. Another financial incentive on offer is Leitão Vida, a state government program aimed at expanding pig production in a modern, competitive way that can meet the needs of the most demanding markets.

Thanks to improved efficiency on farms, pork from Mato Grosso do Sul is recognized as a high-quality product abroad. From January to June 2023, the state sold US $22.45 million worth of 9.81 thousand tonnes of pork to 17 countries. The main destinations are Hong Kong, Singapore, Uruguay and the United Arab Emirates.
