Guest Set Fire to a Fellow Villager's House in Baranovichi District. Investigators Provide Details

Investigators have reconstructed the events, BELTA reports citing Roman Zarmayev, official representative of the Investigative Committee for the Brest Region.
The fire occurred on the night of April 22 in the village of Ivankovichi. The villagers, hearing a loud cracking sound of slate, called the Ministry of Emergency Situations . An investigative task force also worked at the scene. Experts determined that the house could have been set on fire deliberately. A 19-year-old local resident is under suspicion.
"During interrogation, the young man admitted that on the eve of the fire, he had been drinking ALCOHOL with the 57-year-old owner of the house . According to him, out of curiosity, he set fire to a curtain in the room while the man was in the next room. The owner put out the flames, but the guy repeated the actions with another curtain. After that, as the accused claimed, the man went to sleep in the barn, and he himself left the house and had nothing to do with the fire," Roman Zarmaev said about the defendant's version.
However, the young man's words diverged from reality. it turned out that he came and persistently demanded that the victim let him into the house. The owner refused to open the door, then the uninvited guest kicked it down and insisted on drinking alcohol together. The men drank for several days. On April 22, the accused began setting fire to the curtains. The owner of the house put out the fire and asked the guy to stop, but in vain. The victim despaired of throwing out his fellow villager and went to sleep in the barn. At that time, the suspect set the house on fire. 
"During the investigation, the victim and witnesses were questioned, expert examinations were conducted . Based on the results of the fire-technical examination, it was established that the technical cause of the fire was most likely a brought-in ignition source, which could have been the matches with which the boy set the curtains on fire," said the official representative of the Investigative Committee for the Brest Region.
Based on the evidence obtained, the young man was charged under Part 2 of Article 218 (intentional destruction and damage to property, committed in a generally dangerous manner and resulting in large-scale damage) of the Criminal Code.
