The Japanese government, as part of a package of new anti-Russian sanctions, intends to ban the EXPORT to Russia of new and used cars with an engine capacity of more than 1.9 liters, the Yomiuri newspaper reports, citing sources.
According to the publication, the corresponding decision may come into force in early August. In addition, the Japanese authorities expect to completely ban the export of electric vehicles and hybrids to Russia.
Yomiuri notes that in 2022, used cars were one of the top Japanese exports to Russia, accounting for 26% of total exports of related products. For example, last year about 200,000 used cars worth about 250 billion yen ($1.8 billion) were sent to Russia. After the imposition of new sanctions, exports will be limited to small cars, and their value in monetary terms will decrease to about 100 billion yen ($720 million), the newspaper writes.
The largest Japanese automakers such as Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Infiniti and others announced the termination of sales and withdrawal from the Russian market last year. Most of their assets, including factories or shares in joint ventures, have been sold.
In 2022, Japanese used cars became the basis for exports from Japan to Russia, which decreased by 30%, the Autonews.ru portal notes. According to him, the key to high sales was the law on "parallel imports" and the relatively low exchange rate of the ruble.
Since February last year, the Japanese authorities have introduced several packages of restrictive measures against Russia. The sanctions affected both the first persons of the state and the largest Russian companies. Tokyo also banned the supply of locomotives, machine tools, bulldozers, electron and atomic force microscopes, quantum computers, 3D printers and other high-tech equipment to Russia. Since March last year, there has been a restriction on luxury exports - gems, jewelry and premium cars.
Russia calls the sanctions illegal.
