Canada has included the former head of Yandex Tigran Khudaverdyan and TV presenter Ekaterina Andreeva on the sanctions list, according to the government website.

Khudaverdyan has served as managing director of the Yandex group of companies since 2019 and served on the board of directors. He became CEO in mid-March. In this post, Khudaverdyan replaced Elena Bunina, who left to work as an HR director in the Israeli office of Yandex and said that she did not plan to return to Russia, as she opposed the military operation.

On the day of his appointment as CEO, Khudaverdyan came under sanctions from the European Union and Great Britain. After that, Yandex reported that he would leave the board of directors and the post of deputy general director of Yandex NV, as well as positions in the Dutch subsidiaries of the company. Ovsyannikova was fined 30 thousand rubles. for an appeal recorded before the action, under Part 2 of Art. 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (holding a public event without filing a notification in the prescribed manner). At the end of March, the Ostankino court received an administrative case against a journalist under Part 1 of Art. 20.3.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (discrediting the Russian army), according to which it faces a fine of up to 50 thousand rubles. The court later returned the case to the police.

The Russian authorities consider the Western sanctions illegal and have warned that they will respond to them. In particular, in March, the Foreign Ministry banned more than 300 Canadian citizens from entering Russia, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly and National Defense Minister Anita Anand. Subsequently, the list was repeatedly expanded, it also included the wife of Prime Minister Sophie Trudeau, the leadership of the Canadian armed forces, as well as a number of federal and regional officials.
