Specialists from the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor have developed the world's first rapid test for detecting viral hepatitis C, based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technology, the agency's press service reported.

"The new test can detect the presence of the virus in just 25–30 minutes," the institute noted.

Hepatitis C is transmitted through blood and, if left untreated, can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Those with weakened immune systems are the most vulnerable.

By comparison, standard laboratory tests take an average of 1.5 to 2 hours. Rapid diagnosis of the disease is essential for screening studies and anti-epidemic measures, the scientists emphasized .

The development was carried out within the framework of the federal project "The Sanitary Shield of the Country – Health Safety (Prevention, Detection, Response)".

In Russia, the goal has been set to reduce the incidence of viral hepatitis C by 15% and the mortality rate by 20% by the end of 2030, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko announced in May .

These measures are enshrined in the federal project "Combating Hepatitis C and Minimizing the Risk of Spreading this Disease" as part of the national project "Long and Active Life."

According to the minister, in 2024 , the number of patients with chronic hepatitis C who received antiviral therapy increased by 1.6 times compared to 2023, and the amount of funding for the provision of medical care in day hospitals for this category of patients in 2025 doubled compared to 2024.
