WHO calculates almost 15 million excess deaths due

to COVID in two years

Over the past two years, excess deaths from coronavirus in the world amounted to 14.9 million people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

“According to new WHO estimates, the number of deaths directly or indirectly related to the COVID-19 pandemic (excess mortality) from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021 was approximately 14.9 million (from 13.3 million to 16.6 million ),” the statement said.

WHO explains that excess mortality is the difference between the number of deaths reported worldwide in 2020-2021 and the number of deaths that “could be expected in the absence of a pandemic based on data from previous years.” This concept includes both deaths due to the disease, and indirectly related to it - "due to the impact of the pandemic on health systems and society."

According to WHO, the number of excess deaths due to the pandemic for 2020-2021 is higher among men (57% men, 43% women) and older people. The largest number of excess deaths (84%) over two years was recorded in Southeast Asia, Europe and North and South America, while about 68% of cases occur in just ten countries of the world.

According to the WHO report, most of the excess deaths (81%) for 2020-2021 occur in middle-income countries (53% in lower middle income countries and 28% in upper middle income countries), in countries with high 15% of the total excess deaths were identified by income levels, and the lowest number of such cases (4%) was recorded in low-income countries.

In Russia, according to the operations headquarters, 376.5 thousand people with COVID-19 have died since the beginning of the pandemic. At the same time, Rosstat, as of March 2022, counted 547.5 thousand cases, where COVID was the main cause of death, and the total number of deaths with coronavirus was 796.2 thousand. The data of the statistical service differ from the information of the operational headquarters, since Rosstat takes into account cases when COVID was confirmed after death or when it was not the main cause of death.
