Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who is in prison on multiple sexual assault charges, has been sent to a prison hospital due to health issues and the coronavirus, his representative Craig Rothfeld said, according to NBC News.
The 72-year-old inmate "has multiple health issues that he continues to suffer from," Rothfeld said. Weinstein also tested positive for COVID-19 and was diagnosed with double pneumonia. According to his representative, the former producer was taken to the prison ward at Bellevue Hospital.
The film producer's scandal erupted in 2017 after several women accused him of sexual harassment. Among them were such famous actresses as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Salma Hayek, and Cate Blanchett.
In 2020, a court sentenced Weinstein to 23 years in prison. The producer attended one of the court hearings with a walker. In 2023, he was sentenced to an additional 16 years in prison for the rape case.
In April 2024, a New York court overturned Weinstein's 2020 conviction on the grounds that he had called witnesses unrelated to the trial. At the time, his lawyer, Arthur Aidal, said the inmate had been suffering from health issues and had been sent to Bellevue Hospital after the court hearing. "He's been a bit of a train wreck health-wise," his lawyer commented on Weinstein's condition.
