Rospotrebnadzor explained the lack of a cure for COVID-19

Work on the development of a drug for coronavirus infection did not begin immediately, since at first it seemed that COVID-19 was a seasonal disease. This was announced to RIA Novosti by Alexander Gorelov, Deputy Director for Research at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“Work in this direction is underway, but in addition to creating the substance itself, it is necessary to choose the concentration, the dose, so the path is longer than when creating vaccines,” he added.

According to him, the creation of drugs takes longer than the creation of vaccines, and requires significant funds. Gorelov noted that research will continue, but if COVID-19 becomes a seasonal disease, they will stop.

He recalled that there are other diseases against which there are vaccines, but no cures, such as measles and rabies.
