Experts believe that they arose due to the human factor. In their opinion, the number of natural disasters will increase, and the accompanying catastrophes will become much more frequent if the approach to this issue is not changed. Amazon forest fires, 2019

The United Nations University published a study stating that the largest natural disasters and catastrophes on record have occurred as a result of human action or inaction.

The authors of the report analyzed the 10 largest cataclysms and disasters that occurred in 2020–2021 in different parts of the world. Among them were forest fires in the Amazon, heat waves in the Arctic, flooding in Vietnam, Cyclone Amphan, freezing temperatures in Texas and an explosion in the port of Beirut.

According to the authors of the study, the causes of natural disasters were three main factors:

anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions; inadequate disaster risk management; underestimation of environmental threats when making important decisions.
