The European Union has imposed new sanctions against tankers it considers part of Russia's shadow fleet.
The list includes 41 vessels that transport RussianOil exports in circumvention of restrictions, according to the EU Council statement. They are prohibited from accessing EU ports and providing maritime services.
Almost 600 vessels are now under European sanctions.
Russia considers the sanctions illegal. President Vladimir Putin warned that Western countries' attempts to harm or damage Russia, "including the so-called shadow fleet," would lead to widespread problems. He extended the ban on Russian oil and petroleum product supplies under the price ceiling imposed by the EU and G7 countries at the end of 2022 until June 30, 2026. The ceiling is currently $60 per barrel. Restrictions on petroleum products came into effect in February 2023.
In November, EU foreign ministers agreed to prepare additional restrictions against the shadow fleet as part of new sanctions packages. According toBLOOMBERG , the discussion was about "intensifying interaction" with countries that register such vessels, as well as the ability of authorities to board them.
European Union Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas stated that the EU intends to impose sanctions against ships carrying Russian oil every month.
