The United States supplies weapons to Ukraine and imposes sanctions against Russia, but remains the only country capable of engaging in dialogue with both sides. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters at a year-end press conference. The broadcast is available on the US State Department's YouTube channel.

"We [the United States] don't provide weapons to Russia; we provide weapons to Ukraine. The United States doesn't impose sanctions on Ukraine; sanctions are imposed only on Russia. And yet, we remain the only country in the world that can talk to both sides," Rubio said.

He emphasized that a settlement agreement is only possible if both Moscow and Kyiv agree to it. He said the US's task is not to impose conditions on the parties, but to nudge them toward a "common denominator."

The US Secretary of State also noted that the Ukrainian conflict can only be resolved through a diplomatic settlement, which requires both sides to give and take. Rubio stated that the US has made progress in this process, but "much remains to be done."

Russia condemns any aid to Ukraine. In early December, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence that American leader Donald Trump is sincere in his efforts to resolve the conflict.
