The Omicron strain spreads much faster than its predecessors, and also often causes an asymptomatic course of the disease. “Special actions to limit contacts simply lose their meaning”,

Quarantine for people who have been in contact with people with COVID-19 becomes meaningless when the omicron strain spreads because of its properties, Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, said on the Rossiya-1 TV channel. The agency will work to formally abolish it, she added.

“Special actions to limit contacts simply lose their meaning. This is important for infections that cause another epidemiological process: with measles, with mumps. Today we are working to formalize everything properly and talk about the cancellation, ”Popova said (quoted by RIA Novosti).

She explained that "omicron" is transmitted very quickly, while often causing an asymptomatic course of the disease. In Russia, 17-20% of those infected have COVID-19 without symptoms, and in Moscow the proportion of such people is 40%, the head of Rospotrebnadzor noted.

Previously, Popova reported that the incubation period for infection with the omicron strain is two to five days, and the carrier becomes infectious already on the first day, that is, before the onset of symptoms.
