Experts called the year when electric vehicles will account for half of sales

According to Boston Consulting Group analysts, by 2026, more than half of global passenger car sales will be electric vehicles. However, a full transition to zero-emission vehicles is not expected soon.

In 2026, electric vehicles will account for more than half of global passenger car sales, according to a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study, the results of which are available to RBC.

This is four years earlier than the estimate that the experts presented in the previous report. In January 2020, they predicted that electrified models would take over a third of the market by 2025 and 51% by 2030.

According to BCG, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the share of the global market for electric vehicles increased to 12% in 2020 (from 8% a year earlier). In 2025, zero-carbon vehicles, including fuel cell vehicles, will account for 47% of new cars sold globally, analysts say.

Interest in plug-in electric vehicles grew the most in Europe, with sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) jumping 342% in Germany in 2020, and battery-powered vehicles jumping 207% in 2020. At the same time, sales of gasoline passenger cars fell by 36%, and diesel - by 29%.
