Turkey confirms first case of foot-and-mouth disease

"In the course of field work, the first case of FMD infection of the SAT-2 serotype was detected. At the moment, eight enterprises have been quarantined. The World Organization for Animal HEALTH was notified of the situation on March 8," the report says.

This serotype was identified in Turkey following the announcement of foot-and-mouth disease in neighboring Iraq.

Foot and mouth disease is an acute infectious disease of animals that affects large and small cattle, buffaloes, horses and pigs. it is characterized by fever and aphthous lesions of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, skin of the udder and limbs. It can be transmitted to humans through thermally unprocessed foods, as well as in the process of caring for animals. It is not transmitted from person to person.
