
The reason for this slowdown is economic insufficiency for pork producers. If the price of pigs in 2022 increased by 9% compared to 2021, then the cost of feed increased by 32%, which again reflects the increase in grain prices after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Over the years, the number of Danish pig farms has increased. The average pig farm had 2,900 pigs in 2012 versus 5,200 in 2022. In 2012, 4% of farms had at least 10,000 pigs and accounted for 20% of the total pig herd. By 2022, the share of large farms has grown to 15%, and their share in the herd has grown to 47%.
