February 17, Grodno. The Korelichi District
Court sentenced a man who drove drunk and caused a traffic accident to six years in prison, BelTA learned from the Grodno Regional
Court. On
September 24,
2024 , the accused was driving a Ford Escort while
intoxicated , carrying two passengers who were not wearing seatbelts. While driving to the town of Mir, he was inattentive and failed to notice traffic control devices warning of a dangerous section ahead. As a result, he lost control of the vehicle, veered off the roadway into the oncoming lane, and struck an embankment. The passengers in the vehicle suffered minor and serious injuries. The man has a prior criminal record.
The Korelichi District Court found him guilty of violating traffic regulations and operating a vehicle while
intoxicated , which negligently resulted in less serious bodily injury and serious bodily injury. Pursuant to Part 2 of Article 317-1, Part 4 of Article 317, and Parts 2 and 6 of Article 72 of the Criminal Code, he was sentenced to six years' imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony for a combined offense and was disqualified from operating any type of vehicle for eight years. Pursuant to Article 107 of the
Criminal Code, the defendant was ordered to undergo compulsory
treatment for chronic
alcoholism at the place of serving his sentence. The sentence has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed and challenged in accordance with the established procedure.
