January 16, Grodno. Since the end of December 2025, the number of fatalities in fires in the Grodno region has increased. To date,
fires have claimed the lives of 12 people, with 14 injured, BelTA learned from the Investigative Committee of the Grodno Region.
According to the Investigative Committee, nine people died in fires in the region during the same period in 2024-2025.
The agency reported that five people had been drinking
ALCOHOL the day before the fires that resulted in death . The main cause of tragedies remains violation of fire safety rules when smoking - seven such cases have been identified.
For example, if we talk about the fire in a house in the agro-town of Derevnaya, Slonim District, the fire was reported at around 9 p.m. on the last day of December. In one of the rooms, rescuers found the body of a 54-year-old
man . According to the investigation, shortly before the incident, he had been drinking alcohol.
Alcohol . Investigations have established that the fire was caused by careless handling of fire while smoking.
A similar incident occurred on January 2 in the village of Osmolovo, Novogrudok District. Around 11:00 PM, a residential building caught fire. An 81-year-old woman and her 54-year-old son died, and property was damaged. Experts confirmed that
the fire was caused by a fire safety violation involving smoking.
Fires caused by improper operation of electrical networks, electrical equipment, stoves, and gas appliances are also common, the department noted. For example, in late December 2025, a fire was reported in a residential building in the village of Putsevichi, Novogrudok District. The body of the 80-year-old homeowner was found in the room containing the gas stove and electric radiators. An investigator, along with specialists from the State Forensic Examination Committee and the Ministry
of Emergency Situations, inspected the scene and discovered a burn-through hole near one of the radiators. According to experts, the fire was caused by improper use of a gas stove, which resulted in a short circuit in the electrical wiring.
A similar incident occurred on January 9 in Svisloch. An apartment in a multi-story building caught fire. A 78-year-old man died. During an inspection of the scene, investigators discovered burnt food on the gas stove. Expert examinations determined that the fire was caused by improper use of gas appliances and equipment.
