A new gooseberry variety "Avangard", bred by scientists of the South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture and Potato Growing (author Ilyin Vladimir Sergeevich), a structural subdivision of the Ural Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements and recommended for cultivation in the Ural region (9).
Berry culture is mainly characterized by high yield - from 3 to 7 kg per bush, more than 20 tons per hectare. In addition, the new variety has an excellent sweet and sour taste - according to experts, it received 5 out of 5. Large berries (3.3-6.5 grams with a standard size of 2-3 grams) for universal use - can be consumed fresh, and also be used for processing (compotes, jams, preserves).
Variety "Avangard" obtained by crossing the varieties "Slava Nikolska" and "Slightly spiked 2". Work on its removal lasted about 20 years. In the early 2000s, Chelyabinsk breeders singled out the variety as promising, and in 2010 they transferred it to the State Variety Test. During this time, gooseberry seedlings were studied in the Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions, as well as in the Shushensky state fruit and berry variety testing site in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Republic of Khakassia and the Republic of Tyva. And everywhere the culture received worthy reviews.
“Gooseberries are one of the most popular horticultural crops, which are actively cultivated in the Urals. The scientists of our institute have a good start in this culture and are constantly breeding in this direction. By the way, this year we submitted one more new gooseberry variety “Grinchel” to the State Variety Commission for testing. We put the main emphasis on frost resistance, yield and quality of fruits - as a rule, this is the size and taste,” said Firudin Mammadaga oglu Gasimov, leading researcher at the South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture and Potato Growing, Ph.D.
The new gooseberry variety "Avangard" is characterized by a medium-late ripening period from mid-July to early August. Bush of medium size, slightly spreading. Shoots are practically devoid of thorns. For fruiting, the plant does not require pollinators and can withstand colds down to -40 ° C. The variety is resistant to powdery mildew, slightly affected by septoria (white spot)
You can buy a new gooseberry variety "Avangard" in the YuUNIISK nursery (Chelyabinsk).
Reference. The South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture and Potato Growing (a structural subdivision of the Ural Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) was founded on the initiative of I.V. Michurin 90 years ago. The main activity is fundamental and applied research in the field of breeding, seed production, technologies for the cultivation of fruit and berry crops and potatoes. Over the years, scientists of the institute have created highly productive varieties of fruit, berry crops and potatoes, which form the basis of the zoned assortment for the zone of risky farming - more than 300 varieties of horticultural crops and 34 potatoes. In addition, technologies for industrial and amateur gardening and potato growing have been developed.
