Sanka's Love, Vertical Racing, Red Star, Dark Horse, Spring, Semyonovna, Love and Pigeons - not all of these titles belong to your favorite domestic films. Exactly half of the poetic names mentioned are crop varieties that will be recommended for inclusion in the state register of breeding achievements for use in the Chelyabinsk region from 2022.

The meeting, which summed up the results of testing in 2021 of various varieties of agricultural crops and discussed the quality of plant varieties - candidates for inclusion in the register of breeding achievements, was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Chelyabinsk Region. The event was attended by representatives of seed farms, municipal departments of agriculture in the region, as well as members of the Regional Commission for the formation of proposals for the State Register of Breeding Achievements approved for use in the Chelyabinsk Region. This commission is formed from specialists from the regional Ministry of Agriculture, the South Ural branches of the federal budgetary institutions "Gossortkomissiya" and "Rosselkhoztsentr", heads of state variety plots, researchers from regional research institutes of agriculture, horticulture and potato growing,

“Testing varieties at state variety plots in various soil and climatic conditions of the region is one of the most important, effective measures for the further development of crop production and related sectors of agriculture and industry,” said Evgeny Nedbaylo, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Chelyabinsk Region, at the beginning of the meeting. — Based on the results of these tests, the Regional Commission should determine varieties that have an advantage over the best registered varieties in yield, resistance to fungal diseases and drought. This will make it possible to use more effective breeding achievements in agricultural production, which will increase the volume of harvest and improve its quality.

According to the Deputy Minister, the use of varieties that are not recommended by the state variety testing system for use does not give the desired effect, and often brings losses to farmers.
Yevgeny Nedbaylo drew the attention of those present that the current year especially clearly proved the need to use modern developments of breeders in crop production. Despite the unfavorable conditions caused by soil and atmospheric drought in the Southern Urals, many agricultural enterprises, trying to carefully select seeds for sowing, focusing on modern plant varieties, were able to grow and harvest a good harvest on time. According to preliminary estimates, one million 80 thousand tons of grain in bunker weight was collected. The yield and total grain harvest were higher than in the previous, also dry year. More (+35%) oilseeds were also harvested - 180 thousand tons. The area sown with oilseeds this year was increased by 80,000 hectares compared to last year.

Determining the further direction of the discussion at the meeting was the speech of the HEAD of the branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Gossortkomissiya" in the Chelyabinsk region, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Honored Agronomist of the Russian Federation Alexander Anisimov. He detailed the results of the state testing of crop varieties, describing each variety in terms of efficiency and resistance to adverse external factors. Alexander Aleksandrovich also voiced proposals to include new varieties in the State Register of Breeding Achievements in the 9th region for use in the Chelyabinsk Region and suggested considering the possibility of withdrawing from further testing varieties that did not meet the expectations of specialists for high yield and quality.

Scientists and heads of seed enterprises shared their experience of scientific work and production tests, in particular, the head of the Chelyabinsk Research Institute of Agriculture Yury Pryadun, the head of the wheat breeding laboratory of this research institute, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Igor Kushnirenko, the head of the farm Nikolai Shamanin, the head of the department of primary seed-growing complex of crop production of Chebarkulskaya Ptitsa LLC, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Honored Agronomist of the Russian Federation Lidia Pualakkainan and other experts.

As a result of a fruitful discussion, a list of varieties was formed that the Chelyabinsk region recommends to include in the register. This list includes 17 varieties of wheat - soft and hard, barley, potatoes, carrots and beets, as well as Chinese plums and black currants. Information for picky readers: the “names” of the varieties mentioned at the beginning - Sankina Love, Red Star, Dark Horse, Semyonovna - are the “lucky ones” who will delight plant breeders with their yields, and ordinary citizens with excellent taste. Let's add to the list: Odintsovskaya, Nadira, Niva 55, Silantiy, Shukshinka, Horde, Banker, Turkish Delight, Siberian giant, Candied fruit, Gypsy, Shy, Dobrokhot. And for three more varieties already included in the register, but used in other agro-climatic regions, a proposal was made to expand their use to the 9th region, which includes the South Urals. These are potato varieties Carmen, Red Lady and sunflower variety LG 50479 CX.

There were also sad moments. A number of varieties (88), which did not show outstanding agronomic results during variety trials, were withdrawn from trials, which means that they will not be recommended for use in the Chelyabinsk region.

It remains to be added that unrelated state support, or per hectare subsidies, is paid to agricultural holdings, provided that the seeds of zoned crop varieties are used for sowing.
