So he responded to a request to comment on the statement of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who admitted that Belgrade would still impose sanctions against Moscow, because it was under great pressure.
“We are well aware of the unprecedented pressure the leadership of Serbia is under from the collective West. And we are well aware of the cost of what efforts the Serbian leadership managed to withstand this very pressure. We highly appreciate this position of the Serbian leadership,” Peskov said in response to a question from RBC.
Vučić doubted the ability to “endure for a long time” without sanctions against Russia Politics
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Serbia did not impose sanctions against Russia. The European Union has repeatedly demanded that Serbia join the anti-Russian sanctions. Vučić stressed that Belgrade is trying to maintain an independent policy on restrictions, but cannot promise anything. Belgrade will do this if there is a threat to the vital interests of the country, he said.
The Serbian president stated that the republic does not consider the restrictions effective. In the spring of 2022, he promised that Serbia would resist the imposition of sanctions "for as long as it can."
Speaking to parliament on February 2, Vučić said he was “not thrilled” with the idea of imposing sanctions on Moscow, but that it could happen someday, as Belgrade pays a high price for lifting restrictive measures. He added that the country was losing allies because of Russia's support, but promised that Belgrade would continue to pursue an independent policy.
