President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma a draft law “On the termination of international treaties of the Council of Europe with respect to the Russian Federation”, the document is available in the database of the lower house.

As follows from the explanatory note, the following agreements between Russia and the CE will be considered terminated after March 16:

Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms; European Convention for the Suppression of Terrorism; European Charter of Local Self-Government; European Social Charter, etc.

The government invited Putin to denounce the international treaties of the Council of Europe (CE) at the end of December.

They also noted that Russia is a party to the main universal international human rights treaties concluded within the framework of the UN, and always “remains open to pragmatic and equal interaction with members of the organization on issues of mutual interest, and within the framework of those conventions, participation in which decides to continue.

In July, Moscow withdrew from eight Council of Europe agreements, in particular withdrew from the Group on International Drug Cooperation and the 1990 agreement establishing the European Commission for Democracy through Law.
