Russia remains open to the negotiation process on Ukraine , presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters , according to an RBC correspondent.
"We maintain our position; we remain open to the negotiation process," said the presidential press secretary. Responding to a question about the connection between US President Donald Trump's sanctions threats and the negotiation process, Peskov stated that it was worth asking the American side. He emphasized that Russia prefers a political and diplomatic settlement.
Peskov also noted that the 18 EU sanctions packages against Russia have harmed the EU economy. "It is impossible to ignore the damage these 18 packages have inflicted on the EU economy. In this case, the EU is continuing this destructive policy," the presidential press secretary noted.
President Donald Trump, upon returning to the presidency in early 2025, is seeking to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. He has repeatedly spoken about the need for talks between Russian and Ukrainian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Putin stated his readiness for the meeting and proposed holding it in Moscow. Zelenskyy responded that he would not travel to the Russian capital.
To achieve results, trilateral negotiations involving Putin, Zelenskyy, and Trump are necessary, the American president said. He believed the leaders of Russia and Ukraine "hate each other" so much that it hinders their dialogue.
In mid-September, Trump threatened to "hit Russia very hard with sanctions" and said he was "running out of patience" with Putin. He also called EU sanctions against Moscow ineffective and called on Brussels to impose restrictive measures on Russia's trading partners—primarily CHINA and India—and to halt purchases of Russian oil and gas.
Moscow calls Western sanctions illegal and incapable of influencing Russian policy.
